2014
The paper provides an inventory of buckle plates thought to be Byzantine found in France : the Sucidava type and its offshoots, those with an openwork cross or in the form of a cross, the family of buckle plates in the shapes of lyres or tongues, and a few individual pieces. Relatively numerous, these sartorial accessories enjoyed a popularity that has ensured their recognition locally even today.
2010
The presentation of this copper alloy belt buckle decorated with a cross flanked by two griffons from Fleurey-sur- Ouche (Côte-d'Or), gives us the opportunity to review our knowledge of this type of buckle, the corpus of which has been recently enriched by new examples. Even though the fifteen known pieces can be categorized in the group D defined by the characteristic finds of the Burgundian kingdom, the iconographical theme remains quite diverse. Also, discoveries have been made all over this vast area, underlining the existence of several workshops, not only in the Jura put also in the Lauragais area.
This note concerns the exceptional buckle-plate to the Christ cavalier of the Apocalypse discove…
2018
A multi-disciplinary team is currently working on trachyte, a volcanic rock from the Chaîne des Puys (French massif central), within a research program supported by the French ministry of Culture. Although it has been known at least since the 19th century that this rock was used for construction and sculpture in antiquity, and in the making of sarcophagi in the middle ages, the systematisation of the research on trachyte, carried out since 2008, has enabled us to make significant advances in the knowledge of its exploitation and dissemination. Geologists have established a detailed identity card of the six volcanoes where massive lava is available, thereby allowing the classification of eac…
